Five centuries ago, since the birth of our Founder, St. John of God, the example of his life is still inspiring people spreading his work throughout the world.

What was it about this man that made so many people want to help him in his ministry of caring for the sick and the poor in Granada, Spain? What is it that still inspires the Brothers of St. John of God today?

When St. John of God settled in Granada at about the age of forty he underwent a conversion experience that placed him in a psychiatric hospital. The treatment that he experienced allowed him to have a greater insight into the treatment of the sick. He decided to devote the rest of his life to caring for those in need.

We now know that John’s motivation for caring for those who were sick came from his devotion to God and our Blessed Mother. “Whatsoever you do to one of these, the least of my brothers and sisters, you do unto me” (adapted from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 25: 31-46). This is how John measured his service to others. His love continues to encompass everyone, the sick, widows, orphans, prisoners, and the poor.

People were so impressed with John’s sincerity and actions that they called him “John of God.” Today by faithfully following his example the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God that formed after his death continues to serve the sick, poor, and those in need with the same spirit of Hospitality that motivated John over five centuries ago.
